Up until now Sustainable Printed Lanyard options have typically been made from rPET (recycled water bottles) or Bamboo (sustainably grown and organic so will eventually decompose.)
Within the remit of judging the sustainability of a product we need to consider recyclability and / or what happens at "end of life" to the product.
So many lanyards are for single use, a specific event or conference that runs once per year so end of life is an important consideration.
rPET is a recyclable material and Bamboo will decompose but launching this year a new, more sustainable material, has been introduced for the manufacture of lanyards which Team LSi feels is a great solution to single use promotional lanyards.
Seed Paper has been used within the industry for stationery, notepads, packaging and wrist bands but this year one of our key preferred suppliers has launched a 20mm wide printed promotional lanyard made in Europe using wildflower seed paper that is printable to one or both sides from single spot to full colour.
Seed paper, also known as plantable paper or seed-embedded paper, is a type of paper that includes seeds embedded within its fibres.
It is an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional paper, typically made from recycled materials, such as post-consumer waste.
To create seed paper, the paper pulp is mixed with seeds of various wildflowers, herbs, or vegetables. The seeds are evenly distributed throughout the paper pulp during the manufacturing process. Once the paper is formed and dried, it can be used like regular paper for various purposes.
When the seed paper is planted in soil and provided with adequate water and sunlight, the embedded seeds germinate and grow into plants. The paper acts as a natural fertilizer and provides a protective environment for the seeds to sprout. As the paper decomposes, the plants take root and continue to grow.
For single-use lanyards, typically distributed at events and conferences this seed-paper solution means after use each recipient can just plant the seed paper ribbon in some soil in the garden and a mixture of wildflowers will flourish soon after subject to heat & moisture, but should they discard the lanyard it will decompose naturally in a very short time frame.
Here at LSi we think this is a great option for single use lanyards, allowing event organisers to tell a story and encourage sustainable action post conference or exhibition. It allows & encourages continued post event social media activity too where a % of attendees will no doubt share pictures of their wildflowers sprouting and blooming!
